Ladies and Gentlemen, dear colleagues,
dear friends of ANIM,
On behalf of the German Society for Neurointensive and Emergency Medicine (DGNI) and as next year’s Congress President, I cordially invite you to the ANIM 2027 from January 21 to 23, 2027, in Berlin. Next year marks the 44th Conference. The fact that we are gathering once again in the German capital proves not only our long-standing tradition but also the unwavering relevance of our field of medicine.
The year 2027 will be shaped by the practical implementation of the structural changes that have occupied us intensely in recent years. While hospital reforms are now noticeably permeating our daily clinical work, our professional expertise remains the most essential constant. In these times of significant changes, it is vital that we "stay on the ball" regarding the care of neurologically critically ill patients. The ANIM was and will remains a working conference. It does not live on passive consumption, but on personal discourse, collegial exchange, and the collaborative development of solutions.
A particular priority for me is the spirit of interprofessionalism that distinguishes this conference. Neurointensive care is not a solo performance or a mere coexistence of different professional groups; it is a highly complex interaction between medicine, nursing, and therapy—where classical boundaries are increasingly disappearing. Our integrated way of working is our greatest strength, and this should be reflected in the conference program. I am therefore particularly pleased to announce numerous interprofessional contributions. Looking beyond the horizon of one's own professional group toward the overall picture of patient care is an absolute necessity today.
The ANIM 2027 also sends a clear signal for international networking. While there is a political tendency toward segregation and isolation, we, as the only specialized neurointensive care society in Europe, want to fulfill our responsibility and share knowledge across borders. We are looking forward to an excellent participation of international experts. Our partner societies—including those from the USA, India, and the United Arab Emirates—will enrich our program with perspectives that will broaden our horizons. For the first time, there will be a dedicated "International Track" running throughout the entire congress. These symposia will demonstrate the global challenges we face, the regional differences that exist, and how problems are being addressed innovatively worldwide.
I am very much looking forward to shaping this exciting program together with my Congress Secretary, Dr. Nadine Lilla, the DGNI board, and the Conventus team. My thanks go out already to everyone involved for their meticulous preparation and to our industry partners for their valuable support.
I look forward to welcoming you to Berlin, Germany in January 2027!
Yours Prof. Dr. Thomas Westermaier
